Björk (real name: Björk Guðmundsdóttir) is an Icelandic singer, composer, songwriter, record producer, DJ and actress.

The meaning of Björk's name is 'birch-tree' in Icelandic, and is properly pronounced 'Beyerk'. Her last name is Guðmundsdóttir and it indicates relation to her father, Guomundur Gunnarsson.

Björk was introduced to music when she was 11 years old and to punk rock when she was a young teenager. She also played in a number of punk and jazz fusion bands after graduating music school at age 15.

Her first mainstream success came with her band The Sugarcubes, but she soon gained prominence with her solo work. Her music is influenced by different genres, including pop, electronic, classical, experimental, trip hopIDM and avant-garde music.

Several of Björk's albums have reached the top 20 on the Billboard 200 chart, and she has had 31 singles reach the top 40 on pop charts worldwide, including 22 top 40 hits in the UK.

Björk has won the 2010 Polar Music Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and is listed on the list of 100 most influential people in the world, done by Time Magazine in 2015, and is ranked in the 60th place and 81st place on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers and songwriters lists.

Björk has won five BRIT Awards, and has been nominated for 14 Grammy Awards. As of 2015, she has sold between 20 and 40 million records all over the world.
