Amy Winehouse was an English singer and songwriter and was known for her expressive contralto and deep vocals, as well as her eclectic mix of different musical genres, including rhythm and bluesjazz and soul.

Amy Winehouse grew up listening to her father's jazz albums, and was also influenced from an early age from her uncles who were professional jazz players.

Amy received her first guitar at age 13, and a year later began writing music. Amy's significant break came when she was 16 years old, when a former boyfriend, Soul Hopeful Tyler James sent a tape of Winehouse singing with a jazz band to his A&R manager. Eventually, it led to a contract with The Island/Universal record label and also a publishing deal with EMI.

Frank, her debut album from 2003, was a huge success in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury PrizeBack to Black, her second album from 2006, led to her winning no less than 5 Grammy Awards.

Amy Winehouse won several awards during her music career, including 3 Ivor Novello Awards, one Brit Award for Best British Female Artist and 6 Grammy Awards out of 8 nominations.

Unfortunately, Amy Winehouse died on 23 July 2011 of alcohol poisoning. She was only 27 years old.
