1959: Elvis Presley scored his fourth No.1 hit on the UK singles chart with the song 'A Fool Such As I / I Need Your Love Tonight.' It was Presley's first ballad that topped the charts.

 

1965: The single 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' by Bob Dylan peaked at the No.39 spot in the US charts, which gave him his first US top 40 hit. It was reported that John Lennon thought that the song was so captivating, that he didn't know how he would be able to write another song that could compete with it.

1969: 'Life With The Lions' by John Lennon was released on Apple's avant-garde imprint Zapple. One side of the album was recorded on a cassette player at London's Queen Charlotte Hospital. It was at the time Yoko Ono was pregnant, unfortunately it ended in a miscarriage.

 

1971: Crosby Stills Nash & Young scored their second US No.1 album with '4 Way Street.' It is a live album that features recordings from shows at The Fillmore East, New York, and The Forum, Los Angeles.

1976: The Rolling Stones topped the US album chart with 'Black And Blue', the band's sixth US No.1 album.

1982: Asia topped the US album chart with their self-titled album. The album spent a total of nine weeks at the top of the chart and became the best-selling album in the US that year. The supergroup included former members of several veteran progressive rock bands, which were: bassist and vocalist John Wetton (formerly in Mogul Thrash, Family, King Crimson, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep, U.K. and Wishbone Ash), keyboardist Geoff Downes (of Yes and The Buggles), guitarist Steve Howe (formerly in Yes) and drummer Carl Palmer (formerly in The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Atomic Rooster and Emerson, Lake & Palmer).

1993: Janet Jackson started an eight week run at the top of the US singles chart with the song 'That's The Way Love Goes'. It was Jackson's sixth US No.1 hit and a No.2 hit in the UK.

1994: Blur scored their first UK No.1 album with ‘Parklife’. It spent more than two years on the chart. The album features four UK hit singles: 'End of a Century', 'Girls & Boys', 'Parklife' and 'To the End'. One year after the release of the album, it came to define the emerging Britpop scene. The album cover for the album was among the 10 that were chosen by the Royal Mail for a set of "Classic Album Cover" postage stamps which were issued in January 2010.

1995: Supergrass released their debut studio album 'I Should Coco'. The album peaked at No.1 on the UK chart and features their No.2 hit single 'Alright'. The title of the album is Cockney rhyming slang for "I should think so".

 

2008: Neil Diamond topped the US Billboard album chart for the very first time in his career with ‘Home Before Dark’, Diamond's 29th studio album. His previous highest chart position was in back in 1973 when the soundtrack to the film Jonathan Livingston Seagull peaked at the No.2 spot. At the age of 67, Neil Diamond became the oldest artist that had a US chart topper. The record was previously held by Bob Dylan in 2006 with ‘Modern Times’, that was released when Dylan was 65 years old.
