1942: Paul McCartney is born. He was a member of The Beatles, Wings and then continued to a solo career to this day. He is considered as the most successful rock composer of all time. McCartney first met John Lennon on July 6, 1957. Lennon was impressed that McCartney could tune a guitar. With The Beatles, Paul scored 21 US No.1 hits & 17 UK No.1 hits singles. On top of that, McCartney has also scored more than 30 US & UK solo Top 40 hit singles. He has written and co-written no less than 188 charted records, with 91 of them reaching the Top 10 and 33 of them making it to the top of the charts, with a total spending time of 1,662 weeks on the chart.

1955: Jimmy Young topped the UK singles chart with his version of to the song 'Unchained Melody', a theme for the obscure prison film Unchained and also a hit for the Righteous Brothers in 1965. He had another 10 Top 40 hit singles and became one of the most favourite radio DJ's in the UK.

 

1977: Fleetwood Mac topped the US singles chart with the song 'Dreams', the band's first and only US No.1 hit. The song also reached the No.24 spot in the UK. Stevie Nicks said that she wrote the song at the Record Plant studio in Sausalito, California and it took her only 10 minutes.

1983: Swiss band Yello, released the first three- dimensional picture disc, complete with 3-D glasses.

1988: 'Doctorin' The Tardis' by The Timelords topped the UK singles chart. They cosisted of Scottish duo Jimmy Cauty and Bill Drummond, who formed KLF. The song was a mash-up of the Doctor Who theme music, Gary Glitter's 'Rock and Roll (Part Two)' with sections from 'Blockbuster!' by Sweet.

 

2007: Hank Medress, who was an american singer and record producer, died of lung cancer at the age of 68. He was the vocalist on the 1961 US No.1 hit 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' by The Tokens and also in the vocal quartet The Linc-Tones with Neil Sedaka. Medress also produced the hit single 'He's So Fine' by The Chiffons, as well as 'Knock Three Times' by Tony Orlando.
