1963: Kyu Sakamoto started a three week run at the top of the US singles chart with 'Sukiyaki', the first-ever Japanese song that topped the chart. It also reached the No.6 spot on the UK chart in 1963 and reached the No.10 spot in UK for Kenny Ball that same year.

 

1974: The album 'Waterloo' by ABBA, entered the UK chart for the first time, as it peaked at the No.28 spot. ABBA won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with the album's title track.

1985: Dire Straits started a nine-week run at the top of the US album chart with, 'Brothers In Arms'. The album is the seventh best-selling album in UK chart history and also won two Grammy Awards at the 28th Grammy Awards. It also won Best British Album at the 1987 Brit Awards.

1989: The album 'Bleach' which was the debut album by Nirvana, was released in the US. The album's title was inspired from a poster that said 'Bleach Your Works', urging drug users to bleach their needles. Kurt Cobain claimed that most of the lyrics on the album were written the previous night before recording the songs, while he was feeling "pissed off", and that he did not regard them highly.

 

1996: Ella Fitzgerald, who was a US jazz singer, died in Beverly Hills, California at the age of 79. She turned blind due to the effects of diabetes and had both her legs amputated in 1993. Fitzgerald won 13 Grammy Awards.

 

2003: Radiohead scored their fourth UK No.1 with 'Hail To The Thief', their sixth studio album. The title of the album is actually a phrase that was used by anti-George W. Bush activists during the controversy surrounding the 2000 US presidential election.

2005: Coldplay went straight to the top of the US album chart with their third album 'X&Y', after already topping the UK chart. The last time a British artist topped both the UK and US charts simultaneously, was in November 2000 with '1', a compilation of hits by The Beatles. The last studio album that topped both the US and UK charts, was Radiohead's 'Kid A' in October 2000. The album 'X&Y' topped more than 30 charts worldwide.
